Anonymously
Anonymously (Anonymously, A Woman) began in 2020, during the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when silence and separation compelled me to listen more deeply to the unspoken stories of women around the world. This project is rooted in the internal and external forms of self-censorship that women experience, often shaped by the social, cultural, or political environments in which they are raised.
I have witnessed how compulsory hijab has shaped a complex relationship between identity and visibility. Many women, who may not believe in the practice, develop an unintentional dependency on its shielding power. Even after leaving that environment, they may initially find it difficult to reveal their hair in public. Some women silence themselves through their speech, while others do so through their behavior. These varied expressions of restraint, both visible and invisible, are the essence I aim to capture in this series.
Through the fusion of mixed media and calligraphy, I embark on a journey of storytelling, empathy, and empowerment. Calligraphy becomes a conduit, allowing silenced voices to reclaim strength and grace. Each deliberate stroke and letterform carries the weight of lived experience, honoring the resilience of women as they navigate a world that too often renders them invisible.
By intertwining text and image, my work transforms language into a visual form of liberation. The calligraphy itself becomes an act of defiance and reverence, a restoration of voice, a reclamation of identity. Through this process, I invite viewers to listen, reflect, and engage in the collective act of amplifying stories that have long been suppressed or overlooked.
Each piece stands as both a celebration and a testament to the power of storytelling, the endurance of truth, and the transformative potential that emerges when art and language converge. Together, we can create spaces where every woman’s story is seen, heard, and cherished.
